An Ode To Saigon’s Rain Showers

Despite the inconveniences that unpredictable rain showers bring to Saigon, they are an essential part of the city’s character.
While adults may curse the rain for soaking their commutes, children welcome it is a chance to cool off, play games and make friends.
As a child, happiness can be found in simplicity.
During the monsoon season, the heavy rains overwhelm Saigon’s drainage systems, turning streets and alleys into rivers of brown water.
Many run for the cover of an awning or overpass, but children embrace the rain. They splash around like they’re in a giant pool and stand under imaginary waterfalls streaming off of building gutters.
Though far back in my memory, these were the best massages I’ve ever had.
A Saigon rain shower can cause strangers to become friends and existing friendships are further bonded.
Even as we grow, these waterlogged reminiscences stay fresh in our minds, a permanent yet temporary escape from the hustle and bustle of adulthood.
Looking out the window on a rainy day, memories of a care-free life flood my mind.
